Mexico Captures Cartel Leader, Triggering Violent Response
Audias Flores Silva, alias El Jardinero, was apprehended at his safe house in Nayarit, a coastal state in western Mexico — months after Mexican intelligence had identified him as the most likely heir to Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho", the notorious leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) who was killed by Mexican troops on Feb. 22.
Within hours of the arrest, local media reported a surge of vehicle and business burnings across Nayarit and Jalisco, both recognized strongholds of the CJNG. Unrest spread to at least six municipalities, prompting authorities to urge residents to remain indoors. No injuries have been reported thus far.
A joint statement from the Mexican Navy, the Secretariat of Security, and the Attorney General's Office revealed that Flores Silva was caught attempting to flee through a drainage pipe beneath his safe house. Mexican security agencies, backed by intelligence from US counterparts, had tracked his movements for 19 months before closing in on him in the small community of El Mirador.
Despite being shielded by a security detail of 60 individuals and 30 vehicles, Flores Silva was taken into custody without a single shot fired.
"The operation was carried out with surgical precision, without the need to fire a single shot, with no fatalities, injuries, or collateral damage," a statement said.
Flores Silva faces multiple arrest warrants in Mexico for fueling widespread violence, and is also subject to a US extradition order tied to his role in the manufacture and trafficking of narcotics.
US Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson swiftly praised the operation via X.
"The arrest of Audias Flores Silva, 'El Jardinero,' a key leader of the violent CJNG, marks an important step against those who profit from fentanyl and drive violence in our communities," he wrote.
