Mexico Seeks Explanation from US Over Alleged Unauthorized CIA Activity

(MENAFN) Mexico has called on the United States to clarify reports involving CIA operatives allegedly conducting security-related activities inside Mexican territory without official authorization or prior notification to Mexican authorities.

According to reports, President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government formally contacted the US Embassy requesting full details, stressing that the individuals involved had not been cleared under existing bilateral security arrangements and that Mexican institutions had not been informed of their presence or operations.

She emphasized that the matter concerns national sovereignty and security, stating that a new framework may be required to prevent similar incidents. As stated by reports, she added that: “Full disclosure is required. This is a matter of national security and sovereignty. What happened is therefore not a minor issue,”

Authorities said the request followed concerns that foreign operatives had been involved in security-related activities without coordination with Mexican agencies, which officials described as outside agreed protocols.

The issue came after reports of an incident in northern Mexico involving personnel linked to both Mexican and US institutions, who died in a traffic accident following an operation connected to anti-drug efforts in a border state.

Local officials had initially described the US personnel as supporting training activities related to drone use during a narcotics operation. However, later accounts cited in reports indicated that the individuals were intelligence operatives, raising questions over the scope and authorization of their presence.

Mexican authorities have since stated that the situation contradicted established procedures and have called for clearer agreements governing cross-border security cooperation.
