Mexico Demands Explanation Over Alleged Unauthorized CIA Activity
President Claudia Sheinbaum said the government sent a diplomatic letter to the US Embassy seeking full details about the presence and activities of two US-linked operatives, arguing that their involvement was not coordinated with Mexico’s security institutions or defense ministry.
Sheinbaum stated that foreign personnel engaged in security operations must operate under established bilateral agreements, and she described the reported lack of notification as a serious sovereignty issue requiring clarification.
The request follows reports of an operation targeting a synthetic drug laboratory in northern Mexico, during which multiple individuals were killed in a road incident linked to the mission. Subsequent accounts suggested that two foreign nationals involved in the operation were intelligence personnel assisting in training and support activities.
Mexican authorities later indicated that the individuals were not formally integrated into Mexican security agencies, raising questions about whether their activities complied with national legal frameworks governing foreign agents.
The government has asked the United States to provide full disclosure of the circumstances, stressing that any such operations must respect Mexican law and sovereignty and be conducted under agreed security protocols.
The case has prompted renewed discussion about cross-border security cooperation and the legal limits of foreign intelligence activity within Mexico.
