Fatal Tanker Explosion Leaves One Dead in Panama City

(MENAFN) A tanker truck explosion killed one person and left several others injured in Panama City on Monday, triggering a major fire and forcing authorities to close a critical transit bridge indefinitely, officials confirmed.

The blast erupted in the La Boca district, directly beneath the Bridge of the Americas and adjacent to the Panama Oil Terminals S.A. facility. The explosion ignited during a routine refueling operation, with flames rapidly engulfing two nearby tanker trucks and generating thick plumes of smoke and a series of secondary detonations, media reported.

Fire department chief Victor Raul Alvarez Villalobos confirmed the full scope of casualties: one person was killed, two others suffered second-degree burns, and two firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation.

Emergency crews have since brought the blaze under control, and all injured individuals are reported to be in stable condition. A formal investigation into the cause of the explosion is scheduled to commence Tuesday.

As a precautionary measure, authorities closed the bridge immediately following the incident. It will remain shut until structural safety inspections are completed and results are assessed.

Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino took to X — the US-based social media platform — to warn the public of potential travel disruptions Tuesday, calling on both government and private institutions to take necessary precautions.

The Bridge of the Americas spans the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal, serving as a vital artery for regional transportation and cross-waterway logistics.
