Tanker Truck Explosion in Panama City Leaves One Dead, Several Injured
The incident unfolds in the La Boca area, beneath the Bridge of the Americas and near an oil terminal facility. Authorities say the explosion occurs while the tanker is being refueled, igniting a fire that quickly spreads to two other tanker trucks. Thick plumes of smoke rise into the air as additional smaller explosions follow, as stated by reports.
Fire department chief Victor Raul Alvarez Villalobos confirms that one person died, two individuals sustained second-degree burns, and two firefighters were affected by smoke inhalation.
Emergency teams later succeed in containing the fire, while officials say the injured remain in stable condition. An investigation into the cause of the explosion is scheduled to begin on Tuesday.
Authorities also shut down the bridge following the incident and say it will remain closed until structural safety checks are completed and further findings are available.
Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino says on the US social media company X that commuters may face disruptions on Tuesday, urging public and private institutions to take necessary precautions.
The Bridge of the Americas, situated at the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal, plays a crucial role in transportation and logistics across the waterway.
