Trump-Backed Candidate Nasry Asfura Assumes Honduran Presidency

(MENAFN) Nasry “Tito” Asfura, the US-backed conservative candidate, officially began his presidency on Tuesday, following a political crisis that questioned both the legitimacy of his election and President Donald Trump’s support.

At the National Congress, the 67-year-old took the oath of office before Congressional leader Tomas Zambrano, who placed the presidential sash on him. The ceremony in Tegucigalpa was attended by a small group of supporters, without the usual presence of international or neighboring leaders.

“We have to get to work with humility. Time has started to run, and we have to solve people’s problems in order to serve them,” Asfura said in his inaugural speech. He outlined his administration’s priorities, particularly security, welfare, and education, noting that 10 million books had already been printed for first-grade students.

The election process that preceded Asfura’s inauguration divided the country, with opposition supporters claiming manipulation and electoral fraud. The ruling Libre party rejected the results, condemned Asfura’s victory, and criticized Trump’s endorsement as interference.

At his inauguration, Asfura called for national unity. “Hondurans want peace and prosperity, and that is what we are going to focus on. A divided family does not move forward, and Honduras is a great family that must be respected and work together for its future,” he said.
