US demands Venezuela end economic ties with Russia, China, Iran, Cuba

(MENAFN) The United States has reportedly set strict conditions for Venezuela’s oil production, insisting that the country end its economic relationships with several key foreign partners if it hopes to increase output.

As part of this push, Washington wants Caracas to cut ties with Russia, China, Iran, and Cuba and work exclusively with the US in producing and selling oil. The goal is to ensure that American companies gain access to Venezuela’s oil industry, which President Donald Trump has argued was unfairly nationalized under Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chavez.

The pressure comes in the wake of a weekend operation in which US forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores—a move that Venezuela has denounced as a violation of its sovereignty.

On Tuesday, Trump stated that “the interim authorities” of Venezuela would be “turning over” between 30 and 50 million barrels of sanctioned oil to be sold under US control.

The US stance reflects an effort to dominate the oil-rich nation’s energy resources while limiting Moscow, Beijing, and other foreign powers from maintaining a foothold in Venezuela’s economy.
