Cuba states thirty-two combatants get murdered amid US army operation
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel declared January 5 and 6 as national days of mourning to honor the fallen, stating that they performed their duties with honor and demonstrated “fierce resistance,” reflecting Cuba’s enduring tradition of international solidarity.
According to Cuban authorities, those killed were serving official missions under the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior. They had been deployed to Venezuela at the request of local authorities as part of bilateral cooperation.
Venezuelan officials also paid tribute to the Cuban personnel, stating that the government “honors the 32 Cuban combatants who gave their lives in the fulfillment of their duty, in the context of cooperation and defense missions.”
US President Donald Trump had previously confirmed that a significant number of Cuban security personnel protecting Maduro were killed during Saturday’s raid.
Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were taken to New York late Saturday and are being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. US authorities say the couple faces federal charges related to drug trafficking and alleged collaboration with groups designated as terrorist organizations. Maduro has denied the allegations, while Venezuelan officials condemned the operation as illegal and a breach of national sovereignty, demanding the immediate release of the couple.
