US Imposes Visa Restrictions on Haitian Official

(MENAFN) The US State Department announced on Monday that it is implementing visa limitations on a Haitian government official accused of backing gangs and other criminal networks, as well as hindering the Haitian government’s efforts to combat "terrorist gangs."

"The Department will revoke any currently valid visas held by this individual," the statement said, though it did not disclose the official’s identity.

This measure is based on a policy introduced in October 2022, which allows the United States to restrict visas for individuals—and sometimes their relatives—who are reported by Washington to provide financial or material aid to Haitian gangs or criminal organizations.

The department emphasized that the US continues to support Haiti’s stability and anticipates tangible progress toward free and fair elections.

"The Haitian people have had enough with gang violence, destruction, and political infighting," the statement added, noting that the Trump administration will work to hold accountable those who persist in destabilizing Haiti and the surrounding region.
